Hi,
I also would like to know if it is possible to increase the syslinux partition. I'm trying to copy a Crucial firmware to it. Would be really nice if it worked!

Hello Jerry,

Thanks for the great wirte-up.

I got the same problem as Preston Palmer. 2 HDs, NO CD/DVD drive, and I've also got 2 bootcamp partitions (one on each HD).
This is the message I got when I'm trying to run SYSLINUX:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-8qr5fuqqicf614t2wqe63jcajq.jpg

I also hacked BOOTCAMP'S WINSTALL image onto this rEFIt drive, so the startup looks like this:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-xqwbbsb5qcmc8biu6a4ym6jyb.jpg

When I select the right WINSTALL partition, this error comes up:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-j7ra648a77ndteg8eeu1xw538.jpg
( Unsupported while loading bootmgr efi )

Please, if you find out something, let me know.
(I just finished my paper for school and I'm dying to play COD:MW3)

Hello Jerry,

I tried your method but it failed.
After copying the images to the usb disk with dd, MacOS gives the error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
Therefore I cannot continue with your next step of "mounting syslinux", under the heading "Copy FreeDOS image to flash"
Response is appreciated.

I think I have a limitation on the drive I am using as a plain ole Lion install on the flash drive doesn't show up in the boot menu. At this point I've given up.

Has anyone found an answer to the error 1001 in Evernote? I am working on an iPad2 and is error has meant that most (but not all) of my Evernote pages will no longer open. Any help would be gratefully received.

This is very interesting ... has anyone managed to get this working with a partitioned rEFIt/WinPE boot stick, rather than rEFIt/Linux? Is that even possible?

Thanks. I got a little farther. Used gdisk to partition my usb flash drive with a GPT:
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.6.14

Partition table scan:
  MBR: hybrid
  BSD: not present
  APM: not present
  GPT: present

Found valid GPT with hybrid MBR; using GPT.
Disk /dev/sdf: 31649791 sectors, 15.1 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): A5912DFB-3AE1-4FCB-B1FC-3BF7742A8FF1
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 31649757
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 2014 sectors (1007.0 KiB)

Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
   1 2048 14850047 7.1 GiB 0700 Linux/Windows data
   2 14850048 14852095 1024.0 KiB 0700 Linux/Windows data
   3 14852096 31649757 8.0 GiB AF00 Apple HFS/HFS+

Then ran gptsync on /dev/sdf, mkfs.vfat on /dev/sdf1 and mkfs.hfsplus on /dev/sdf3 . I can then install syslinux to the first partition (sudo syslinux -i /dev/sdf1 ) and copy my syslinux config and img files over. The drive will now boot on PC. If use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone a working Lion install to the HFS+ partition and then copy the efi to that partition and the run the magic enable always script it works! Well the first time. On my first boot on the Mac, when holding the Option key the USB drive showed up, but I can't get it to show up in the boot menu the second time. It is still bootable via Startup disk(although not it to rEFIt). I tried re-running the enable script. Any thoughts?
(sorry if my description is muddled, its late and I switch between Ubuntu and OS X in building this). If I can get it to work better documentation will be created.
