Hey Zachary, it should be possible to boot into a Linux partition from rEFIt but unfortunately there are some issues I haven't sorted out yet. You don't need the DOS firmware update, it's just an example of how to boot into DOS and do a hdd fw update on a Mac. I use Syslinux to load the DOS disc image.

For a Linux live USB flash drive I'd recommend Ubuntu. There are <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx" title="How to create a bootable USB stick on OS X" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">instructions</a> on how to create the bootable USB stick on Mac OS X.

hey, I'm having issues creating a linux live usb for my mac
i basically just want a usb drive i can plug into any computer mac or windows, and have it be able to boot into linux.
im confused about the seagate or the sea flash i followed the interactions and it booted the computer into the dos but is the firmware upgrade required? I'm just lost at that point, also how do i create a partition for the linux os, i would just like to boot the computer select the rEFIt and launch that and then boot the computer straight into linux instead of the dos firmware update. is that possible, also what would i change then in the syslinux.cfg file to achieve this?

Hi mikolaj, it's been a long time since I struggled with the setup until it worked for my MBP. Some other users reported trouble and booting errors especially with newer MacBooks. As I don't have access to many different MBP models I can't test nor troubleshoot these errors.
Try creating your own image using <a href="http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/" rel="nofollow">UNetbootin</a> with FreeDOS or check if you can get a bootable flash drive with ChromeOS or Ubunutu first.
It's also possible that Apple locked down the EFI on newer Macs.
I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance right now.

Hi,
I also would like to know if it is possible to increase the syslinux partition. I'm trying to copy a Crucial firmware to it. Would be really nice if it worked!

Hello Jerry,

Thanks for the great wirte-up.

I got the same problem as Preston Palmer. 2 HDs, NO CD/DVD drive, and I've also got 2 bootcamp partitions (one on each HD).
This is the message I got when I'm trying to run SYSLINUX:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-8qr5fuqqicf614t2wqe63jcajq.jpg

I also hacked BOOTCAMP'S WINSTALL image onto this rEFIt drive, so the startup looks like this:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-xqwbbsb5qcmc8biu6a4ym6jyb.jpg

When I select the right WINSTALL partition, this error comes up:
https://img.skitch.com/20111217-j7ra648a77ndteg8eeu1xw538.jpg
( Unsupported while loading bootmgr efi )

Please, if you find out something, let me know.
(I just finished my paper for school and I'm dying to play COD:MW3)

Hello Jerry,

I tried your method but it failed.
After copying the images to the usb disk with dd, MacOS gives the error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
Therefore I cannot continue with your next step of "mounting syslinux", under the heading "Copy FreeDOS image to flash"
Response is appreciated.
