The Henge Dock is a beautifully designed docking station for MacBook and MacBook Pro. MacBook Air is not supported. Unlike most business laptops from Dell, IBM/Lenovo, or HP the MacBook is lacking of a proprietary interface for a docking system. Expensive docking stations also provide storage and sometimes even an external GPU. Luckily Apple has put all connectors on one side of the MacBook.

Basically the Henge Dock is a vertical stand with an array of holes. These openings match exactly the positions of the MacBook’s ports. You have to put all the cables (you need) in place through those holes and fix them with the screws provided in the box. Thats’s it – a DIY docking station or more likely a 1:1 port replicator.

Coin Dozer is a highly addictive little game. It’s the iOS version of an old slot machine some may know from times BI (before internet). The game is pretty straightforward: there’s only a small tapable area at the top, tap and a coin drops down. That’s pretty much it.

There is a variety of seasonal versions (Cookie Dozer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Asian New Year), all available as free (ad supported) or paid Pro version. I’ll stick to Coin Dozer – it has the shortest name and it’s free.

To avoid the ads which have slight negative impact on performance you can turn Airplane Mode on or just deactivate Wifi and Cellular Data if you don’t want to miss a call. Read how to get free coins for Coin Dozer…

Finally, I upgraded the harddisk of my 15″ MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) to a 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT solid state hybrid hdd. At first I hesitated because of the various reports about vibrations and heat issues. Eventually the moment arrived when I ran out of free space on my original 250 GB Hitachi drive and it left me no choice. As I was already using Squeezer which saved me a considerable amount of GBs and I couldn’t free any more space.

Just updated my iPhone 3G to iOS 4.1 beta 2. The beta 1 already did a good job in improving the UI responsiveness over iOS 4.0 but beta 2 acts like a turbo! No more delays and snappy interface – almost feels like an iPhone 3GS. In my previous post I mentioned the clogged iPhone 3G after unlock. Now this issue has been completely remedied. Even apps seem to start faster. Wow! Continue reading “iOS 4.1 beta 2 released – much improved performance” »

It’s been a week now since I installed the new iOS 4.1 beta to my iPhone 3G. Hesitated at first, but then I gave it a shot and am very pleased. It feels much faster on the UI and crashes less often than the “stable” iOS 4.0. Many apps still close intermittently or won’t even start but overall the 4.1 beta seems to be less demanding on resources like memory or background processes. With yesterday’s update of Yammer for iPhone to version 3.0 it resumed working. In my previous review article about the new iOS 4 Yammer was one of the few apps not compatible with iOS 4. The app started correctly and showed the account list but didn’t let you go further. Selecting an account either crashed the application or just didn’t do anything. Apple just released the GM (Golden Master) candidate for developers. I downloaded and tested the new iOS 4 yesterday on my iPhone 3G 16GB. I skipped the betas as it’s currently my only phone and some of the betas were reported to render the iPhone pretty unstable.

This final release of the new iPhone OS 4 (now called iOS 4 as its range of target devices has been extended to iPhone, iPod and iPad) works fine and stable on my old iPhone 3G. I still can’t record videos and have to pass the multitasking feature due to lack of CPU power.

Have tried the iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 for a couple of days now and am not too impressed. Tethering, Copy/Paste and A2DP were the main features I wanted to use early. Copy and Paste work. Continue reading “Review: iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 firmware – ups and downs” »

img_0039I just installed Skpye on my iPhone 3G. It works fine, the interface is a bit sluggish and it tells me that my data plan prohibits Skype calls on EDGE/3G. I hope that it’ll support calls from wireless networks. Will try it later today.

Update

After some testing – didn’t really test the app but fiddled around a bit – I can say that it really works as expected. Skype for iPhone is the real deal. It has the genuine look and feel, has these distinct sounds and jingles and works perfectly right out of the box App Store.

As I already stated it won’t let me make calls while on EDGE or 3G. The error message states that my provider prohibits making VoIP calls through his network. While connected over WiFi with internet access I can make HQ Skype (out) calls and save money at the same time. Great. Continue reading “Review: Skype for iPhone 3G released” »
