This is even better than the last Git client. First SourceTree has been acquired by Atlassian and now they’re giving it away for free. You can get SourceTree on the Mac App Store or download it directly from the web page. The direct download requires registration to obtain a free license.
For all developers out there: Gitbox turned 1 and is now on sale for $9.99 instead of $39 for a limited time. Gitbox is a nice git client with a neat UI that integrates perfectly into OS X.
VMware Fusion 4 now supports Mac OS X Lion 10.7 as guest system. Earlier versions only allowed server versions of Mac OS X to be installed as guest OS. Finally no more hacking around. The security incident at DigiNotar has created a big hole in online security. DigiNotar’s CA has been hacked and cannot be trusted anymore. The list of know fraudulent certificates contains some high level domains e.g. google.com, mozilla.com, yahoo.com, torproject.org, and many more.
Some browsers and OS already have been hardened with a patch or an updated CRL but how about Mac OS X users?

Mac OS X’ Dock is a good place to keep your most used items at hand. Just drag and drop an app icon to the Dock to add it manually. You can also pin a running application to the Dock permanently with a right-click (or control-click) on its icon and select Options > Keep in Dock.
Some folders just won’t stick to the Dock, e.g. the /Applications folder. To forcefully add those insubordinate items you have to make an alias first and then add this alias to the Dock. Continue reading “Add special applications folder to dock in Mac OS X” »
Mac OS X Lion 10.7 has now become officially available at an incredibly low price. Had been running Lion DP and GM for a couple of weeks now and the experience constantly improved over time. The OS didn’t cause any problems but many apps did. Most apps have been updated for Lion compatibilty recently and I’m sure the others will follow soon.

Many users on different forums reported that their Mac wouldn’t enter sleep or hibernate automatically since they installed the Momentus XT hybrid drive with firmware SD24 and SD25. I knew about the no spin down issue since SD24 but didn’t realize my MacBook Pro wasn’t entering sleep mode any more until a user asked me about it.
Putting OS X into sleep manually, closing the lid of my MBP, and setting a sleep timer or using any app that puts the mac to sleep were not affected and worked as expected. The only thing not working was the inactivity timeout for automatic computer sleep.

Current developer previews of Mac OS X Lion 10.7 are missing Front Row and it doesn’t look like Apple will put it back into the final release of Lion. (Please prove me wrong!)
Actually Apple has abandoned support a long time ago and crippled Front Row gradually in the past updates. All these changes have rendered FR pretty useless for many users – including myself.

This is a detailed description of how to create a bootable USB flash drive that actually will boot DOS, Linux or even Windows on your Mac. There are countless threads about this but none had helped me in this particular situation.
Your Mac won’t boot from any MBR partition on USB flash drives (thumb/pen drive, memory stick, SD, …) directly. Whereas DOS doesn’t know about GPT partitioning scheme… This is where rEFit fills the gap.
I used several PCs for testing and formating as some tools are only available as Windows executable and others are Linux only. This particular task was to create a DOS boot drive for a MacBook Pro 2008 from the bootable CD ISO image.
