The Henge Dock is a beautifully designed docking station for MacBook and MacBook Pro. MacBook Air is not supported. Unlike most business laptops from Dell, IBM/Lenovo, or HP the MacBook is lacking of a proprietary interface for a docking system. Expensive docking stations also provide storage and sometimes even an external GPU. Luckily Apple has put all connectors on one side of the MacBook.

Basically the Henge Dock is a vertical stand with an array of holes. These openings match exactly the positions of the MacBook’s ports. You have to put all the cables (you need) in place through those holes and fix them with the screws provided in the box. Thats’s it – a DIY docking station or more likely a 1:1 port replicator.

Just got some hot deals for MacBook Pro on MacMall I couldn’t keep back. The new MBP has just been released (Thunderbolt I/O, FaceTime HD, Quad Core CPU on 15″/17″, new GPU) but the “old” ones are still in stock for a few days.

If your budget is limited (who’s isn’t?) and you still need/want a MBP then take a closer look at these offers. Especially the 2nd 13″ / 2.66GHz model is a great deal if you can pass on FaceTime HD and Thunderbold port. Both CPU & GPU are still very fast and won’t restrain productivity or fun for a while.

A Pro on sale, shouldn’t be missed! Continue reading “Up to $349 Off on Closeout MacBook Pros” »

This is a detailed description of  how to create a bootable USB flash drive that actually will boot DOS, Linux or even Windows on your Mac. There are countless threads about this but none had helped me in this particular situation.

Your Mac won’t boot from any MBR partition on USB flash drives (thumb/pen drive, memory stick, SD, …) directly. Whereas DOS doesn’t know about GPT partitioning scheme… This is where rEFit fills the gap.

I used several PCs for testing and formating as some tools are only available as Windows executable and others are Linux only. This particular task was to create a DOS boot drive for a MacBook Pro 2008 from the bootable CD ISO image.

You may have read my previous review on the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid SDD/HDD and even bought one for your MacBook (Pro). Mine is running fine and I’m still very pleased with its performance after 5 months now. No freezes or lockups or crashes though I noticed periodic spin-downs every once in a while. Not a real SSD but still pretty fast, especially on regularly used files and apps. And that’s where it counts most.

Apparently the first revision SD22 had some issues with power management/spin down cycles. I haven’t had any problems with my drive which already came with firmware revision SD23. There are still some users reporting problems (mostly Windows users ;-) ) with intermittent OS hanging/freezing and crashing with SD23. Read how to perform firmware update for Momentus XT on Mac…

iPhone 3G vs 4 – USB Power Adapter

On 2010/09/20, in Gallery, by jERRy

img_3613 This is the small iPod/iPhone USB Power Adapter (A1300) compared to the old one (A1205). Both have the same power output.

If you travel abroad you’ll need an extra AC plug adapter. The interchangable AC plugs from Apple’s World Travel Adapter Kit can’t be used on the new one.

The slim design fits nicely into my Brenthaven bag’s side pocket along with the MacBook Pro’s power adapter where the bulky wall wart (A1205) never did. Continue reading “iPhone 3G vs 4 – USB Power Adapter” »

Review: Apple Universal Dock

On 2010/09/20, in Reviews, by jERRy

img_3590 This is Apple’s Universal Dock for iPod/iPhone (MB125B/G). Thanks to the universal adapters this dock can be used on any of those devices. A couple of adapters are provided in the box.

For my new iPhone 4 I had to buy some new adapters. Unfortunately they’re only sold in a pack of 3. Many people would be happier if they were sold separately or if at least one of them would be provided in black for those alarm clock radios and sound stations/speakers.

Apple Remote 1G vs 2G

On 2010/09/19, in Reviews, by jERRy

img_3605 Got it a while ago but never took the time to write a review on the Apple Remote 2G (aluminum). You may consider buying it even if you’ve got the 1G (white) one which came with your MBP, iMac or Universal Dock.

My 1G (A1156) came with the Universal Dock but I only used it for Front Row. I always liked the roundish design, it’s much smaller, and feels much more comfy in your hands. It’s just the perfect remote. Continue reading “Apple Remote 1G vs 2G” »

Finally, I upgraded the harddisk of my 15″ MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) to a 500 GB Seagate Momentus XT solid state hybrid hdd. At first I hesitated because of the various reports about vibrations and heat issues. Eventually the moment arrived when I ran out of free space on my original 250 GB Hitachi drive and it left me no choice. As I was already using Squeezer which saved me a considerable amount of GBs and I couldn’t free any more space.

The new iMac 2009

Just saw the new iMac in the video ad on Apple’s home page. The highest spec machine will house a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 Quad Core CPU and all the memory and storage you’ll ever need in a 27-inch display. Wow, I definitely need this!

The 21.5-inch models and the 27-inch 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac are already available from $1200 to $1700. The Quad Core iMac starts shipping in November 2009. Continue reading “New iMac released – 27-inch LED display and Intel i5 Quad Core” »
