Just wanted to share this as we all can get the double amount of bonus storage per referral until end of August 2009. So only a few days left, hurry up and get your free online storage now!

Get SugarSync for free + 500MB bonus storage

SugarSync is an online storage provider like Dropbox. Both give you 2 GB of storage for free and they both offer some additional space for a monthly fee. Most of you probably know Dropbox already, so I’ll explain a bit of SugarSync and the pros and cons I encountered so far.

  • 2 GB of storage for free
  • 500 MB additional storage bonus per referral until 8/31 (both of you get the bonus storage!)
  • 250 MB additional storage bonus for using the free iPhone/iPod Touch client (only for the iPhone user)
  • unlimited bonus storage can be earned by refarral until 8/31
  • OS X + iPhone/iPod Touch + Windows client for free
  • Share folders (optional password via email or by link)
  • Sync folders across all clients or just with online storage
  • Share pictures as online albums or automatic slideshow (publicly or selected contacts)
  • Manage contacts and groups
  • Nice and easy to use web interface
  • Nice desktop client (Mac + Windows)
  • iPhone client allows picture upload from camera or photo library
  • Secure web access via HTTPS (default)

That’s it, just a simple and easy to use online storage you can access from anywhere with internet access. Compared to Dropbox I really digg the iPhone client. I’ve read that the desktop client can only be installed on 2 computers at a time. I’m using the free account and no problem for me so far. I only have one installation on my MacBook Pro and another one on my Windows Laptop. Apparently the mobile client doesn’t count as I have installed it on my iPhone 3G as my 3rd device.

Don’t forget to install the free SugarSync Manager for automatic sync to your computer and easy upload to your free web space.

Enjoy your free storage and use my link to get the additional bonus storage! Any feedback appreciated.

So long,

jERRy

The problem with “free” is there is always something behind it. Companies need to make money. Most get VC money and rack up users offering free services so they can get more money. But, at some point, the VC money runs out and then everyone who is “hooked” into this free service is going to get charged. Or the company will go out of business and your data will go bye, bye. I would rather pay to get something that is secure and reliable.

@Don: You’re right, usually you get what you pay for. So I wouldn’t trust it for my crucial backup strategy as advertised. Both services Dropbox and SugarSync are commercial, but they offer a free but limited account instead of a 30-days trial. Most users who are satisfied with that free service won’t and wouldn’t have ever paid for it. Those few who are really interested can try it for free not only for a few days and then may convert to a paid customer. That’s what I call service. Especially if you pay for this service you can get an idea about what to expect from it from the T&C’s.

But for sharing the pics from your last party with your friends and for “transporting” some downloaded PDFs I really like those services. All my USB sticks always were full or contained the wrong files. Sharing pics via FTP, an online album or Facebook never suited me. This is just fun and easy to use and I enjoy it as long as it lasts.

Actually I wouldn’t personally recommend spending too much money on those services. For 8.90$/mo you already get plans with unlimited storage and traffic at godaddy.com, have your own web hosting solution, have backup and can just upload some open source CMS to have even more features – but you’d have to maintain it yourself!

It seems that the double-bonus promotion has been extended once again (as of June 2011 now):

If you use the following link to sign up for Sugarsync, you now get 5.5 GB of free online storage forever: https://www.sugarsync.com/referral?rf=ejjfpyq3n6nmz
