Apple officially released the final iOS 4. It’s still called iPhone OS 4 in the SDK, but both names refer to the same code/piece of software. The iOS 4 GM (Golden Master) was made available to developers 2 weeks ago and should be exactly the same code as yesterday’s official release. I’ve been testing iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G for 2 weeks now and reported some of my experiences in my iOS 4 review on iPhone 3G.

Though the title of my review article suggests a quick 24h review I updated the list of apps (not) working in iOS 4 constantly during those 2 weeks. I also updated the content continuously according to my experience with iOS 4 running on an iPhone 3G.

A 3GS would’ve been perfect for the test as it supports almost all of the new features in iOS 4. My 3G doesn’t support multitasking but my iPhone 4 is only a couple of days away – yay!

iBooks

iBooks

As expected Apple held back the iBooks app for iPhone until the official launch of iOS. My guess is that they can’t restrict download and installation to iPhone/iPod touch with iOS 4 only.

They should have shipped it with the OS or at least sent the developers a direct link to iBooks while keeping it hidden in the App Store. Maybe I just missed it among all those T&Cs, mails, readmes, … nvm, it’s now publicly available.

iPod touch

More good news for all iPod touch users (2nd & 3rd gen) out there: iOS is a free update for you, too! Until now iPhone OS upgrades were free for all iPhone users but paid updates for iPod touch users.
