Not every provider has approved tethering with your iPhone. Some countries even have a netlock installed on their devices and Apple has locked up access to most parts of the iPhone OS for any user.
There are a few jailbreak solutions out there and I had an early try with QuickPWN which didn’t work out as expected. After that I didn’t even bother trying out yellowsn0w or any of the other colored snow cracks.
Jailbreaking your iPhone just removes Apple’s iTunes only lockdown. As long as tethering worked with both my MacBook Pro and the Windows notebook from work I had all I needed with my iPhone 3G. But Apple had also locked down the tethering hack with the latest 3.1.2 update. Damn! Now it’s time to go for the unlock again.
Removing the netlock is a bit harder and won’t work with all iPhones. Until now! automaticiphoneunlocker claims to crack and totally unlock any iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touches 1G/2G. Even with iPhone’s baseband version 05.11.07!
Unlike the other jailbreak solutions this one isn’t for free, but the $29.99 if definitely worth a try. It’s a one time payment including lifetime updates (which is good as Apple will eventually issue a new firmware) with a 30 days money back guarantee.
I’m looking for a used and locked iPhone 3G/S which is less pricy than an unlocked one and will unlock it myself. This will finally replace my old HTC Windows Mobile device that serves as a backup/car phone with a second (cheap) contract.
FYI: For me the “regular” tethering hack only worked via USB but never via Bluetooth on my iPhone 3G and all the MacBooks/Pro and Windows XP/Vista notebooks I could get hold of. Other users reported the same and a few said it was the opposite from their experience.
