The attentive observer may have noticed a slight change in the layout during this weekend. Yes, you’re right, I changed the theme of my WordPress. The new layout of io101 has been refreshed and also optimized for iPhone and iPod users. The last theme was the closest match to what I wanted, but it I never had the time for all the adjustments I once planned. So this is a new attempt, this time based on the iBlog 3.0 theme and the iWPhone plugin and theme. Both are free and can be found on wordpress.org.
iPhone/iPod
Last week’s stats showed 42% Mac users vs. 32% Windows users and 24% iPhone/iPod/iPad users. Me too uses mi iPhone to browse da inet, so I decided to optimize the site for those mobile users! The optimized theme for mobile Safari only applies to iPhone/iPod users and drops all the menus and widgets. Just content. There is another WordPress theme for iPhone I’d like to try: WPtouch. This looks much more advanced than the theme that came with iWPhone.
iPad
Mobile Safari on the iPad uses the same theme as the desktop browser. The higher resolution and “big screen” of the iPad doesn’t need any adaptation. If you feel different please leave a comment. I’ll be glad to hear some opinions of you – still too few – iPad users out there.
iBlog
The new main theme for desktop users is called iBlog from PageLines. It mimics the style of Apple’s web site. I liked it from the beginning but it didn’t work out as expected in version 2.0. Now that version 3.0 has been released as a free WordPress theme I really love it. On their web site the latest iBlogPro4 theme is available as a commercial theme. Not a cheap one but slick and highly sophisticated.
Currently it’s just an early test to evaluate the existing themes and plugins before I start adapting and optimizing them for my needs. I really don’t want to spend too much time on this but once finished I’ll post a detailed how-to on the plugins and themes.
Further changes will apply during the next couple of days/weeks. Feel free to comment on this.
