Japanese iPhones already have emoji enabled. You can enable emoji on your iPhone without jailbreaking for free. There are some apps that enable emoji but most of them aren’t free or they are chinese or japanese.

The free iPhone app Spell Number – Emoji for FREE is still available in the Apple App Store and has a built in easter egg. Just open Spell Number and type in 9876543.21 then close the app. Now you can activate emoji for the japanese keyboard.

Hurry up, Apple has requested the developer to remove the easter egg. The currently available version 1.03 still worked for me. Click the iTunes link below to go directly to the iTunes App Store.

Update 2009-03-03

Spell Number isn’t available for free any more. It’s sold for $0.99 now. Also the name has changed to Spell Number – Emoji but the app is still on version 1.03 which includes the easter egg to enable emoji on non-Japanese iPhones. The soon to come update to version 1.04 won’t include the ability to activate emoji.

Too late, the new version 1.04 without emoji support has been released to the App Store. At least it’s for free again. The suffix has changed again into – Emoji for FUN.
